Gum disease, which is also called periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums, bone, and tissues that surround and support the teeth. About 75% to 80% of Americans have some form of gum disease. Gum disease most likely affects adults over 30, but anyone at any age is at risk for various reasons.

Unlike healthy gums, which as are pink and firm and do not easily bleed, diseased gums are typically red and swollen (the early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis) and bleed easily when brushed. Gingivitis usually doesn`t cause pain, and often goes undetected if you don't see your dentist regularly. As gum disease progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, leaving deep pockets where plaque can grow and do further damage. This later stage of gum disease, called periodontitis, can progress until the bones that support the teeth are damaged. Teeth may become loose or fall out, or need to be removed.
